Pedri, the magical gem from Las Palmas, is set to join Barça on 1st July, after a year loan at Las Palmas. We have Puig, De jong set for building a brighter Barça in the future. With the addition of Pedri, and possibly Alena, we await a great Barcelona flaunting a beautiful football, bossing the midfield again.
ABOUT THE PLAYER
Pedro Gonzalez Lopez, commonly known as Pedri, is a Spanish footballer who plays an attacking midfielder for Las Palmas. He was born in Tegueste, Tenerife, Canary Island.
A 17 years old playmaker with twinkling toes and eyes for cutting pass, a bargain signing, is set to join the club back. Barça signed this youngster at just €5m with €1.5m variables from Las Palmas back in September 2019.
He was loaned back to Las Palmas for a year. He is now returning as a promising youngster and critical player for the future Barcelona.
He started his career with UD Tegueste, a club at his hometown, and later went on to join Juventud Laguna in 2015. In May 2018, he signed for UD Las Palmas’s youth setup. On July 15, he signed his professional 4-year contract with the club aged only 16 years old after being promoted to first-team by Manager Pepe Mel. On August 18, 2019, he made his professional debut against SD Huesca for the Segunda Division Championship and netted his 1st Goal on September 19, taking his team to glory over Sporting de Gijon.
On September 2, 2019, FC Barcelona reached an agreement with Las Palmas for the transfer of Pedri, effective as of the following July 1, on 5 m with 1.5 m variables.
Pedri is an absolute playmaker. He preferably plays at the left-wing in 4-2-3-1 position but is capable of playing as CAM and right-wing. He is a right-footed player but can use his weak foot efficiently, especially when fascinating some excellent skills.
The most incredible trait about this 17 years old lad is his defence-splitting through balls, which makes people doubt his age. His vision goes beyond his age. If we looked at his assist for Las Palmas against Deportivo La Coruna back in Oct 2019, he makes a through pass past five defenders leading to Goal, something that Xavi did, something that Iniesta used to do and something that Messi does.
Though it’s still early to go with Xavi, Iniesta narrative for a guy who’s barely 17 years old and is yet to show his remarkable role in the team, it is still worth a mention considering the way he executes them like it’ s a piece of a cake for him. His pace, his stamina, and his defensive attributes are good as well.
“My first reference is Andres Iniesta. I love his football and how smart he is in the field. For me, how he plays is an art, and now I love Frenkie De jong, and I look at him a lot.”
HIS VIEWS ON BARCELONA
To play for the football club Barcelona is a dream for almost every player. Pepe Mel had also mentioned how he looks up to Iniesta and plays like him too.
According to Goal, he had turned down Liverpool and Chelsea to sign for Barça, and back in 2018, he had a trial with Madrid but failed and had joined Las Palmas three months later. In an interview with Mundo Deportivo, when asked what he had in mind regarding offers from Barça and other big names, he said, “Since I saw Barça, I have not hesitated. I have always wanted it. That they call you makes you proud, but Barça is the team of my dreams, and I would sigh with my eyes closed.”
He has three goals and five assists for Las Palmas in 29 appearances in the Segunda division. He made national team debut for Spain U-17 in 2019. In detail, for Las Palmas, he has created 2.17 chances per 90 mins.
He recently came into limelight with beautiful assist with excellent dribbling past a defender against CD Lugo on June 20, 2020. He reminded the world about his quality and inevitably raised Barça’s hope from him in the coming future.
Undoubtedly Pedri loves Barça, and Barça has high hopes from him, Pedri has also talked about how he admires the kind of football Setien plays.
As of now, we are still unsure if he will go out on loan again or if he stays in the same division as Barça B or if he will be signed in the First team. He has a clause in his contract, and he won’t play for Barça B unless they promote to Segunda division.
He is young, talented, and full of beliefs. Five million euros can be considered a bargain considering the quality he carries. He has talked about the dream of being with Messi in a locker room or on a field. Will this dream turn into reality or will there be another Todibo heartbreak, we are yet to see. But, this guy has a Barça gene and is a player that Barça should keep.
