Ramón Rodríguez ‘Monchu’ is an attacking midfielder who likes to get into the area and close to the goal with a versatile skillset. Monchu is the captain and leader of the Barcelona B, he played most minutes this season for Barcelona B. Monchu scored eight goals, his goal-scoring ability is one of his strength. Despite the fact, he is only 20-years-old. Still, he knows when to make a surprising run into the penalty area to get at the end of a cross, and has extraordinary ability to shoot no matter short-range or long-range, thus he takes free-kicks and penalty kicks for Barcelona B.
Rising through ranks
Ramón Rodríguez Jiménez was born on 13 September 1999, commonly known as Monchu in Palma de Mallorca. At five years of age, he started his football journey with a local club, CIDE. His next step was Mallorca before arriving at La Masia and reinforcing the U14A team. Monchu joined Barcelona youth system or commonly known as La Masia in 2012, and he made his debut for Barcelona B just after five years for the U19 team at the age of 17 only.
Monchu started getting regular call-ups from the Barcelona B which prevented him from playing the final phase of the youth league. Monchu’s coaches have always been vocal about his technique as a jewel in the rough that still needs to be polished and that is still small in stature for not having given the lug. In Mallorca, his natural position was that of a midfielder, something that he has been alternating at Barcelona; also playing as attacking midfielder and interior player, which offers many possibilities for the team.
Monchu is a technical player, and his passion and commitment for the game make him an incredible talent. Monchu has an astonishing ability to pass, move, shoot, carry the ball and protect it. He is an outstanding distributor, in tight spaces, short distances and at one touch, but also with his sharp long-balls to a teammate. Monchu attitude links him with a player like Arturo Vidal as he is brave to seek space and to run through the flanks to reach the final third and his technical abilities link him with Xavi. He is a midfielder, but the variety he offers is something special as he can play as an attacking midfielder as well as a holding midfielder, he got the ability to play box to box too. With the Arthur situation and lack of players for Barcelona’s clash against Napoli, he can be part of the starting because he can provide a lot of mobility and dynamism to the team as they will lack. After all, Arturo Vidal and Sergio Busquets are suspended, and Barcelona lacks midfield options.
Monchu can be the next big thing and heart of Barca’s midfield as he has the flair of many great players and his talent is also commendable. In recent years Barcelona is struggling to find a midfield player with creativeness and a player that can be there for many years at Camp Nou and being only 20-years-old he can be the answers of all the dilemma for the Catalan giants. As per reports, he will not be part of Barcelona B but the thing is many clubs have contacted Barcelona for his service from Valencia, Real Betis to Sassuolo. Barcelona should hold on to him as the financial situation is not good. He should stay at the club and should be given regular chances. Monchu playing in the midfield with Puig and De Jong is something will last longer as Puig and him with their pace and passing ability and De Jong as holding midfielder; they can be at the service of the club for long because all three are young and with most first-team players in their 30s this can be a start as what future FC Barcelona will look like.
