First things First! Leo Messi gave all Barcelona fans a breather by giving his much-awaited decisions on Sunday, committing his loyalty to the club he loves for another season and also expressing his feelings about the pathetic management of the club by the Current Barcelona board.
Coming to the re-building process for the coming season, news reports are suggesting the club has set for a new No.9 for the coming season to form a partnership with Griezmann and Messi as Suarez, the third-highest goal-scorer in Barcelona history with 191 goals is looking for an immediate exit and he is being told to search for a new club as he does not fit into a game plan for the new coach, Koeman.
Memphis Depay is the latest name which is being speculated in the media as the new No.9.
CAREER AND PLAYING STYLE
His versatility in the positions speaks volumes of him, right from the PSV days until now at Lyon. But his preferred position is the left-wing as we can look at the positional stats above where he has played, scored and assisted mostly in that left-winger role. Should he come to Barca, then he will give a tough competition to Ansu Fati and probably Dembele for the starting role.
Depay started his professional career with PSV Eindhoven, where he was an integral part of the team, scoring 50 goals in 124 games for the club across all competitions. He also won the Dutch Footballer of the Year for his performances during the season.
His breakthrough performances also led him to be named the “Best Young Player” in the world in 2015 by France Football. His breakthrough 2014/15 season gave him the much-needed platform to play for a bigger club as he was the top scorer in Eredivisie when they won the league title.
Depay joined English side Manchester United in June 2015 for a reported fee of £25 million. But Depay failed to make his mark at Old Trafford, lasting just 18 months before being sold by Jose Mourinho in January 2017. The Netherlands international arrived with high hopes in the summer of 2015, taking the No 7 shirt which is made famous by the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Eric Cantona, George Best, and David Beckham.
Currently, with Lyon, the Dutchman has responded emphatically to his critics, becoming one of the best players in Ligue 1 and also guided the club to the dream CL run to the semis only out-classed by eventual champions, Bayern Munich.
Will Memphis Depay flourish at Barcelona?
Replacing Suarez will be a daunting task for Barcelona now as Messi has now agreed to play in the coming season. Depay has surely shown great promise at Lyon but his previous spell at Manchester United questions his ability to adapt himself with a big club. But one can’t underestimate his skills, talent and to play in various attacking positions. Fans, as expected are not happy about this. Two seasons ago, this seems similar to the case of Paulinho, the most surprise signing in recent times.
Considering how he’s 26 years old, he has his chances to make a mark at Barcelona. With Koeman already familiar with the player, his playing style, his potential, there’s definitely some sort of hope on Depay. And instead of going for Martinez with that much of price, to go for a signing like this with affordable price would be worth a sort.
Moreover, it’s not like we are having a crisis at that forward position. We have Griezmann who’s yet to be tested at that forward position. Depay to Barcelona, won’t be a disastrous signing if the price tag isn’t like how it was in the past couple of seasons at Football Club Barcelona.
