“I’m tall and quick, and I can beat opponents with my speed. I win balls too, I know how to apply to play pressure, and I’m skilful. All of that is going to help me to adapt to playing for Barcelona.” Matheus Fernandes said this about himself during an interview. Barcelona signed Matheus Fernandes on the deadline day on winter transfer window of 2020, but he joined the club on 1 July 2020.
In this article, we will discuss Barcelona’s new signing.
Matheus Fernandes Siquiera was born on 30 June 1998 in Itaboraí in Brazil. Matheus Fernandes started his career in the youth teams at Botafogo and made his first-team debut in 2016 for the Brazilian club. In next two seasons, he made 70 appearances for the club and then he moved to Palmeiras. At Palmeiras, Matheus Fernandesmade 11 appearances, in the winter transfer window of 2020 he was loaned out to Real Valladolid. Matheus Fernandes had to wait until restart to make his debut, after the restart he made his debut against Atletico Madrid.
Matheus Fernandes is a midfielder who can play as holding, central as well as an attacking midfielder. Still, he stands out as a defensive midfielder because of his defensive qualities in the midfield, and his ability to bring the ball out from the back. His usual position is as the holding midfielder due to his excellent skills at winning the ball back.
The above picture shows the variety offered by Matheus Fernandes when we take a look at his last 50 matches; he provided a lot of variation by playing in different positions in the midfield. Matheus Fernandes played thirty-four games as a defensive midfielder; he played nine matches as attacking midfielder and played seven games as a central midfielder.
Despite his young-age, Matheus Fernandes shows a lot of maturity in the game; his physic plays a vital role in that. His 6 feet height helps him to stop an attack in its tracks along with his long, sturdy limb. His physic also helps him to knock an opponent off the ball with a classic shoulder-to-shoulder challenge. His strength also makes it difficult to pinch possession away from him, as he can protect the ball from all angles and drive beyond his marker, and all these qualities help him to play box to box.
When asked about his idol, Matheus Fernandes said, “I have admired many players, but most of all, Busquets. I always took inspiration from Busquets. There were others, like Xavi, Iniesta and Messi, who were all role models for me.” Busquets has the most significant influence on him, and it’s evident by his playing style and positions.
AREAS OF IMPROVEMENT
While there are a lot of positive sides of this transfer, we can’t ignore the fact that he was not a regular starter at Palmeiras. He didn’t play a lot of matches for Real Valladolid, to be precise he played only three games for Real Valladolid. Matheus Fernandes lacks a lot of the first-team experience, and he has been inconsistent as well.
The chart above shows the strong and weak areas of Matheus Fernandes, he still needs time to learn, and with the rumours of Monaco and Sassuolo showing interest in him, Barca can loan him out, so he gets his minutes and improves his game.
Matheus Fernandes is a great player and has a great future ahead. Barcelona should hold onto him and should send him out on loan so that he can learn even more and come back to Barcelona with his best quality. He is still young, but he does have skills and defensive qualities that football club Barcelona seeks. Many people were surprised when Barcelona announced this transfer, but many don’t know, Abidal himself had gone for the scouting.
Barcelona is now getting ready for the post-Messi era so we should hold onto which shows the variety and have great potential. After some years he can play as the CDM or as CM as per the requirement of the club.
