Barça drop points yet again recording their first defeat of the season at the Camp Nou. As rivals, Real Madrid, on the other hand, clinched the league title in the penultimate game of a disappointing LaLiga season. Here’s a comprehensive match summary of Barcelona vs Osasuna.

LINE-UPS

With Griezmann out injured, Quique Setién has chosen to start the youngster Fati at the LW. As rightly predicted by Barcatimes in the match preview, Rakitic, Busquets and Fati were included in the starting XI.

In his traditional 4-3-3 formation, Setien has named Ter Stegen between the sticks and Firpo at LB. It is now evident that Semedo will continue to be Setien’s first-choice right-back.

Several players have been rested including Busquets and Alba who were replaced by Rakitic and Firpo respectively. Puig is starting for the third successive game as Roberto has been named as his midfield partner.

But, very surprisingly, Frenkie De Jong didn’t make it today’s line-up despite being fully recovered from his knee injury. Here are the full line-ups for Barcelona vs Osasuna.

FIRST HALF

Barcelona got off to a slow start, allowing Osasuna to attack, who’ve managed to have an early shot on the goal. The Blaugranas were playing with a deep sense of urgency which was very similar to the second half of the previous game against Valladolid.

Resultantly, Osasuna went 0-1 up at the Camp Nou in the sixteenth minute with Jose Arnaiz. Estupiñan continued to make runs on the left flank after the first goal.

Later on, in the first half, Barcelona did come close with a couple of free-kicks from a shooting distance, but Messi pulled both of them just wide of the goal. The Catalans continued to push for the equaliser. They had a couple of shots on target from a few corners but in vain. The first half ends with disappointment as the Setien’s men seem mentally drained out.

GOAL 0-1: JOSE ARNAIZ- 13′

Jose Arnaiz breaks the deadlock. The former Barça man converts from inside the box with a fine finish. Estupiñan raided down the left flank and supplied a dangerous cross into the middle. Arnaiz latched onto the delivery and dispatched a low strike into the bottom left corner past Ter Stegen to make it 0-1.

SECOND HALF

Barcelona began the second half on an attacking note. The Blaugranas almost had an equaliser in the 47th minute. The goal was disallowed as Messi was caught offside. Barcelona continued to push for the purpose.

After putting two free-kicks wide off the target in the first half, Messi has finally bent one in, providing Barcelona with the much-awaited equaliser.

Barcelona came close yet again as they have another disallowed goal. This time with Suarez as the Uruguayan was flagged offside after putting it past Herrera.

After the disallowed goal, Barcelona kept attacking, but Osasuna were able to catch Barcelona on the break, which ultimately led to a goal by Torres. Torres’ 93rd-minute winner has officially put an end to barça’s title hopes.

GOAL 1-1 : LIONEL MESSI- 49′

Messi pulls off another one of his trademark free-kicks. La Pulga bends his shot around the wall from the left side of the post. It clipped the inside of the post to beat the goalkeeper before rolling it into the net. Precisely what the team was desperately looking for.

GOAL 1-2: ROBERTO TORRES- 93′

This 93rd-minute goal by Torres has shattered Barça’s hopes of regaining the title crown. The visitors retain their lead as the forward converts from the close range. A weak header from Busquets allowed Perez to move forward feeding Barja on the left flank. He passed it to the back post where Torres fired it past Ter Stegen.

CONCLUSION OF THE MATCH SUMMARY

This loss is going to have a substantial mental impact on the players. There were several instances during the game where the players looked drained out.

The Blaugranas will have to try and regain the winning form and momentum in the next game as it’s crucial for the team to stay in good shape before the much-awaited champions league return.

LOOKING AHEAD

With the league title already lost, we can expect Setien to rest players on the final game of the league season. Messi and Pique are likely to be the ones benched, as they haven’t been given enough time to recover from the last game. As I have already mentioned in my previous match summary, barça will have to start mentally preparing for the Napoli game if they haven’t already.

Players such as Martin Braithwaite and Ansu Fati are likely to be started again for the next game; with Griezmann injured, and other players rested. For a much more detailed preview of the game, make sure to check out the match preview that will be posted on the final matchday.
