FC Barcelona Femení won their toughest game of the season so far, 3-0 against their biggest rivals Atlético Madrid Femenino. Barcelona was expected to win but not without a fight, the scoreline might not show it but it was definitely not a smooth victory for the Catalans. They were playing their first match after getting their previous two fixtures canceled due to COVID-19 cases in their opponents’ teams. The goal scorers were Patri Guijarro, Jenni Hermoso, and Lieke Martens.
In this editorial review, our top editors will review the team’s performance against Atletico Madrid.
Even on their worst day, Barça remains on top.
It wasn’t Barcelona’s best match of the season so far but, being able to overcome rivals Atletico Madrid 3-0 is a significant result. The fact that it wasn’t their best day and they still won by that margin just shows how impressive their performances have been. There were moments in the match where, due to Atleti’s pressure, there was some imprecise passing which led to errors and loss of possession but, the players reacted well to get the ball back and in the worst case, Cata Coll was well prepared to protect the goal.
The strikers also weren’t having their best day. Barça created many dangerous chances but, many ended up off target or straight into the hands of the keeper. Luckily, this squad has so much talent that they can still be consistent and that’s allowed them to remain undefeated in the league and maintain the second place slot with two games less.
Natalie’s Player of the Match: Cata Coll. She’s come up big for the squad in the last few matches without Sandra Paños so it’ll be interesting to see what Lluís Cortés decides to do when Paños does return. Coll had a cool head the entire match starting from the first minutes of the game when she stopped Toni Duggan’s penalty shot with a fantastic block and then walked it off like it was nothing. She had very impressive footwork and used it to trick Atletico Madrid stickers multiple times during the game which made up for some pretty entertaining highlights.
An important Match won in style
FC Barcelona Femeni started as unmistakable favorites. The best part about the team is that there is no dependence on a single player in the squad. The match between Barça and Atleti Femenino is considered to be the match between the best of the Spanish Teams, perhaps this was the reason why Spanish NT coach Jorge Vilda was present to watch the match from the stands. The match was high pressure and Barça gave away an early penalty but it was saved by Cata Coll, who is a great young talent in the team.
The first goal finally came in a little after the 30th-minute mark, with a marvelous pass from Caroline Graham Hansen which was finished in style by Patri Guijarro. The next came in a few minutes later via a penalty taken by the great Jenni Hermoso. She is two goals away from Sonia Bermúdez’s record and three goals away from being the leading goal scorer for Barça Femení. In the second half, Barça had a few more opportunities, with a notable close miss from Alexia Putellas, who despite this fact had a great game. The third goal finally came in the 84’ minute, courtesy of Lieke Martens who was left uncovered in the box and scored from a great pass by Graham Hansen, who had a great overall game with some amazing passes upfront.
Barça has scored 24 goals and conceded none in the five matches they have played so far. The team has gone 892 minutes without conceding a goal so far. It is the best ongoing record in the history of the team.
Afreen’s Player of the match: Caroline Graham Hansen. As always it’s very difficult to pick one from Cortés’s extraordinary side. He has a great squad rotation that helps the team play with pressure till the last minute. But, today Caroline was the standout performer for me. She was great in the midfield, very consistent, and played some amazing passes upfront. Her two assists were the game-changer for the team.
Barça remains untouchable
Barca missing out on two consecutive games before meeting their biggest domestic rivals cost them their much admirable playing style. Nonetheless, they showed their superiority and came on top despite not displaying their best football. It says a lot about the quality of this team and the expectations on them when they are subjected to slight criticism though the scoreline is 3-0 at full time.
Cata Coll saving Toni Duggan’s penalty to deny Atletico the lead in the early minutes was a crucial moment. She continues to impress in the absence of Sandra Panos. Overall, the team gave everything. Atleti was pressing high, Ludmila was causing all sorts of trouble, and former La Masia defender, Laia Aleixandri put an incredible effect to stop the Catalans. The first 20-30 minutes were rather uncomfortable but after Patri’s opener but the team found a rhythm and grew in the game.
Tooba’s Player of the match: Mariona Caldentey, she never rests. An absolute machine who leaves everything on the pitch, her work rate is immense. She was tracking back, defending, putting pressure on Atleti, and looking for spaces to exploit.
