In this editorial review, our top editors will review the team’s performance against Sevilla.
Veni, Vidi, Vici
Barça returned to its home, The Johan, to continue business as usual. With total control of the game, Barcelona Femeni smashed Sevilla and already led 4-0 in the first half. The team was a steamroller and made clear, once again, that if you leave them any little space, they will destroy your hopes in just a matter of a few minutes. I was delighted to see that Lluís gave some minutes to players who had relatively little opportunities in the past season. Vicky Losada demonstrated what a world-class player she is and, in the absence of Jenni Hermoso, Lieke and Mariona showed they are totally compatible on the pitch. The Legend of Barça, Melanie Serrano, scored an Olympic goal and Oshoala continued her love triangle with the goal and the offside. Whoever is on the pitch gives it all, and with their talent and thirst for trophies, this team has no limits.
Laia’s Player of the match: Lieke Martens. She played the whole game after quite some time, and she was an arrow on the left-wing. I am delighted to see that she is getting back to her great level of performance, and I am hopeful that Lluís will find a way to ensure that Mariona and her are compatible on the pitch.
Too Easy for Barca
Too easy for Barcelona Femeni, eyes now on the final, Jenni Hermoso was not missed at all in a match that was all Barça. It was a relatively simple game that was over in basically 30 minutes. Even though the Blaugranas had many missed chances, they still managed to score six goals. It definitely proved the importance of Cata Coll for Sevilla last season as without her; their defence was nowhere to be found. There was so much open space for Barça to have full control on the pitch. Sevilla resorted to playing with 11 defenders as the whole Barcelona team was pressuring high up. When Mapi Leon takes the corners, you know they’re dominating the match. It was nice to see Cata Coll playing the full 90 minutes, but I would’ve liked to see Laia Codina and Giovanna Queiroz get on the pitch, but once again Lluís Cortés made substitutions before the 60th minute of the game, I hope this keeps up. With this win, Barcelona Femeni continues their run of clean sheets in the competition as they look to the final against Logroño in hopes of winning the domestic treble.
Natalie’s Player of the Match: The entire team basically. It’s hard to pick in such a one-sided match, but Mariona was very influential. She showed great footwork, easily broke down the defence, created brilliant opportunities on goal and incredible passes to her teammates. Mariona could’ve even gotten a couple more assists. She was fantastic in ball recovery and was still trying to get her goal even in the last minutes of the game when the team was already winning by six goals. That kind of drive is what helps teams win trophies.
An incredible team effort
Barcelona Femeni had a great start to the game with the first goal coming in less than 5 minutes with a fantastic assist by Patri Guijarro and a great finish by Asisat Oshoala. The team looked great from the beginning and kept the pressure on the opposition team. The lead was doubled in the 17th minute with a terrific low goal scored by Graham Hansen. Patri Guijarro continued her excellent goals scoring form with another goal a few minutes later. The high pressure first half saw another goal by Asisat Oshoala just before half time. The second half saw an outstanding corner kick goal scored by Melanie Serrano in the 68th minute. A few minutes later Aitana Bonmati made it 6-0 for Las Azulgrana.
The opposition goalkeeper Sara Serrat saved an impressive header by Hamaraoui. Vicky Losada opened the defence with her pinpoint passes, and Lieke Martens was brilliant throughout the match with some excellent displays on the field. They will play their finals against EDF Logroño. Barcelona is in great form scoring 10 goals in 5 days and conceding none.
Afreen’s Player of the Match: Asisat Oshoala. It is difficult to pinpoint one player in such a great team effort, but I feel, a great start thanks to Asisat’s early goal set up the mood for the rest of the game. With this brace, she has scored 4 goals in 2019/2020’s Copa de la Reina.
