FC Barcelona Femeni continues to assert their dominance in the league, as they won 6-0 vs Logroño. The lineup was experimental; many usual starting players were rested; however, that didn’t hinder the quality of the team at all. The goal scorers were Aitana Bonmati with a double, Lieke Martens, Caroline Graham Hansen, Vicky Losada and Alexia Putellas.
In this editorial review, our top editors will review the team’s performance against Logroño.
Home sweet home
Before the game, Barcelona Femeni received the 2019/20 Primera Iberdrola cup, and it seems that, with Atleti already missing points and Barça steamrolling their opponents, the Primera Iberdrola 2020/21 has in Barça, its most fervent contender. This time, Barcelona Femeni smashed Logroño by 6 goals, and it could have been 7 if Oshoala’s offside did not deny Aitana’s (amazing) goal. A beautiful goal that would have mean, also a hat-trick for the Masia’s jewel. In fact, if there was a main character in this game was La Masia.
Melanie, who has been in the team for 16 years substituted Leila in the starting squad, and her connection with Marten’s was beautiful to watch. The Dutch player appears more confident and, with Melanie covering her back, she is freer from defensive tasks. This translated in a great game for the 2017’s Best, who appears to be fully back in shape. Besides, with Codina, Vicky and Aitana as starters, and Jana and Bruna enjoying minutes, Barça showed why they did not need to sign a bunch of players this summer. They have the perfect fits for the team at home. Let’s hope that Lluís keeps giving minutes to the young players. In a league where no team seems to be keeping up, the competitiveness to shine every second on the pitch must come from within Barça’s squad. Last season, the competition between Patri and Kheira, made them both thrive in their respective matches. Martens’ and Mariona’s competition for a spot promises to repeat the story.
Laia’s Player of the match: I would have said Martens if she played more minutes. Her connection with Melanie gave some freshness to the left side. Still, taking into account the whole game I would say Hansen. The right side was a nightmare no matter who she had covering her back. When she has the ball, the spectators hold their breath.
The table-topping performance
The 2019-2020 Liga champions finally got their hands on the trophy before the start of the match.
The girls were in a good spirit from the beginning with the first shot on goal coming from Patri which was blocked by former Blaugrana GK Pam Tajonar. Within a few minutes, the ever-versatile Lieke Martens opened the scoring with a fantastic goal. The second goal was scored at the 17th minute by Caroline Graham Hansen with a great individual run inside the box. The caption Vicky Losada soon joined the party and scored on a rebound after her first shot was saved. The high pressure first half saw another shot on target by Lieke, but the header hit the woodwork. Just before half time Aitana Bonmati pounced quickly on a defensive error and scored before others could understand what was going on.
The second half saw plenty of substitutions. With start players Lieke, Asisat, Vicky going off. The coach has a rotating squad and is known for making early substitutions, and it works well with the team as the new legs help the team play a high-pressure game all through the 90′ minutes. The second half saw two goals, one by Alexia Putellas and a last-minute goal by Aitana Bonmati. The team is playing very well. They have scored 16 goals in the last 3 matches within 10 days and are yet to concede a single goal. Barcelona Femeni is now at the top of the League table.
Afreen’s Player of the Match: Aitana Bonmati. As always, it was a team effort, but for me, the 22-year-old Aitana was just fascinating to watch. The youngster is technically gifted and plays equally well with both legs. She is definitely a player to watch out for as she can play both as a midfielder and a winger with excellence.
